Chris Harris joins Top Gear Magazine Editor Jack Rix to discuss the new Tesla Model S 'Plaid' - a revision of the Model S with 1100bhp, a 0-60 time under two seconds, and a steering wheel suspiciously devoid of its roundness. So, what do you think of the 'Plaid'? Let us know in the comments.
Also, if you're in the UK, don't miss the new series of Top Gear, available on iPlayer right now:
P.S. It was quite chilly in the hanger that day, hence why the boys are wrapped up.

It's another BS marketing.. Battery's cost a lottt and if you use all the power you will stay in the middle of the road
commantros exetlos
commantros exetlos Giorno fa
@odisy64 no I can't go for hour because of roads but the car can.. Battery ones can't for now.. 0 to 200 with full tank vs full battery is not even comparable on how many times you can do 0 - 200..battery car will loose.. And new ones now battery cost are retarded high price if broke.. Talking about over 15000 euro on a 40.000 euro battery car..and they do brake a lot.. Its BS marketing simple.. Battery its not there yet.. Looses energy when pushed very very fast
odisy64 Giorno fa
@commantros exetlos when are you ever going full throttle for hours? Where are you getting all that gas? How are you not overheating your oil? Ev's are track capable, a model 3 won first place in the exhibition class at pikes peak.
commantros exetlos
commantros exetlos Giorno fa
@odisy64 yes boy but I can be full throttle for hours.. Try that with battery..
odisy64 Giorno fa
If you burn all your gas you will also be in the middle of the road, happened to few people i know, good thing Teslas tell you when and where to charge so you dont accidentally run out.

The guy from engineering explained has already pissed over the sub 2secs to 60 claim with real world figures. These figures are for the Plaid and Plaid+ models with a foot of rollout declared which is hidden quite deep in the small print of a sub screen on the tesla site. The car is doing 5.9mph after a foot so in reality this is a 6-60 figure. True 0-60 will be over 2 secs. Still impressive but it just shows how unbelievably arrogant musk is to let these figures go out publicly knowing full well they would be under immediate scrutiny. See the explanation here:
sarcastixx74 11 ore fa
@odisy64 Not in the UK though mate. I've no probs with CH at all, in fact the opposite - I love his content and followed him for a long time. I've never seen anywhere about the 1 foot roll out being an industry standard, I was led to believe it was specific to NHRA? If it is the norm, then every manufacturer is blatantly lying, a lot of cars are already at 4mph+ by the end of that 1 foot. They should not be stating 0-60, as they are not measuring from zero.
odisy64 Giorno fa
Ive been listening to him for years, when i saw the video the first time before watching it i told myself "ya, if tesla is using a 1 foot roll out, but thats an industry standard, why single out tesla?" Seems like he just wanted to make some content but everyone uses a 1 foot roll out for their advertised speeds.

The Tesla cannot do 0-60 in under 2 seconds... it’s a marketing fad and you shouldn’t believe it.
odisy64 8 ore fa
@Fraser Wilson what research have you done? can you name any other project similar to this? who else has built an undergrounds tunnel this quick for this cheap under a major city? im not arguing that it will do 0-60 under 2 seconds, your doing that for me. what i actually think is that its disingenuous to only mention tesla doing this when every other company (IN THE US) uses it as a standard. just incase you dont get it because im sure you dont, i dont believe it will hit the 0-60 in under 2 seconds without the 1 foot rollout. am i still going to say "0-60 under 2 seconds) yes. and if you dont get why, you should stop thinking with your emotions.
Fraser Wilson
Fraser Wilson 9 ore fa
@odisy64 hahaha! Cities were "Impressed" by the speed and low cost? do a bit of research, i'm begging you.The Boring company hasn't saved costs in any way compared to any other engineering company. there's nothing impressive about creating "A new form of transport" that costs a fortune and is literally slower than walking. And besides... Are you honestly trying to argue that it will do 0-60 in under 2 seconds when even they admit, it can't do it? pointless debate.
odisy64 12 ore fa
@Fraser Wilson wow, low volume companies from Europe, perhaps you should not forget all the American automakers using it. You seem like your very angry if your willing to accuse companies of fraud. The boring company just completed a tunnel under Vegas, the speed and low cost has impressed leaders of other major cities in the US. So i can imagine this company being very relevant in 10 years.
Fraser Wilson
Fraser Wilson 12 ore fa
@odisy64 Simply untrue. You look at porsche, Ferrari and Aston Martin's advertised 0-60 times and you'll find they use a true 0-60 time (otherwise it's clearly stated what kind of metric they're using.) -It's almost like it's a legal requirement ;) What Tesla are doing is lying about their performance to YOU in order to generate hype for a car that doesn't even exist yet. Why be defensive of a brand that co-exists with boarderline fraudulent companies such as The Boring Company? You shouldn't be that naive.
odisy64 Giorno fa
A 1 foot roll out is something every carmaker includes in their advertised speeds.

They did just barely, touch on how electric cars are nowhere near petrol when it comes to “the network” but I want to emphasize that it’s more bout showing off than the real experience that gas cars give... just like how quick the dual clutch shift times become out of date... petrol cars are becoming a lost art. I feel like we should have gone with hydrogen to be honest. @topgear

Well, their point about acceleration is spot on, and I'm an acceleration, but not speed (which is boring) freak. The car does a 0-60 which must be verging on what is possible with a car with 'normal' tyres.. So, the next speed development must be lower to the road, with a smaller windscreen. Anyone that's driven a fast original style mini knows it's the fastest car they've ever driven, even though you know it's not! Pocket rockets are where it's at!

When I seen Chris Harris you know its gonna good. True automotive journalist in my own opinion. I cant wait to see his review of the new Audi RS E Tron! I think people should take into account that a all electric vehicle is the best option when you see just how much less driving we are doing because of Covid-19. It makes sense to me. I love my gas powered cars don"t get me wrong. I am actually gonna convert my 99 528i with the inline 6 and take that inline 6 and use it as the stand for a table in my sim racing room like how they did on Top Gear UK. R.I.P. Sabine Schmitz.

The under 2.0 seconds 0-60 is a lie. That is drag strip 0-60, where vehicles get a 1 foot rollout. So true 0-60 will be over 2.0 seconds. Second Lucid Air has a model with over 500 miles of range. FYI it’s their first car and it’s better than Tesla.

They make no sense at times. Having over 1000hp in a family sedan that is totally quiet and very luxurious to drive.. that feels like a normal car most of the time but has 1k hp to tap into when needed? That has always been the fantasy of a car enthusiast. These guys are just trying to sell what the never-ev guys want to hear. I was going to buy the new vette but man for 50k more I can get so much more from a plaid while getting more speed than the vette.

Misleading advertising from Tesla, it's not under 2s 0-60 at all, the small print has a disclaimer - "excludes the first foot of rollout", so it's actually about 5-60 not 0-60, which makes a significant difference! (putting it closer to 2.5s)

Just with a racing tire you can reach 1.3 of friction coefficient, needed to allow the car accelerating 1.3g to get from 0 ti 60mph in less than 2 seconds... Normal tires can just garantee you a friction of 1 that allow you to accelerate from 0 ti 27.8m/s in 2.8s.... More or less

For the end bit: this is where renting EVs come into play. If you own your personal EV, you're stuck with the latest tech from that moment and time. However, if you (and businesses, for that matter) rent their EV cars and EV fleet vehicles, the automakers will take your EV, replace its battery tech, and refurbish those batteries for other uses such as thermal management for buildings.

This is exactly why the British Empire has been in decline since the early 1900's. No imagination, just a bunch of put-downs with nothing better to offer. You think Landrover, Jag, Aston-Martin are going to pull out of their current tailspin? Ford tried, BMW tried and now India (Tata) is throwing in the towel as well. You Brexited to nowhere and no one else in the world cares. Any used electric car that is on sale in 2021 will depreciate much less than any ICE model going forward. Battery degradation is now minimal across the board, and software is either being upgraded over the air or at the dealership to keep the vehicle current. Residual values of leased ICE models will decline so much in the next 2-4 years that lease payments will have to triple which will accelerate the sales decline of ICE vehicles. Cathy Woods of Ark invest estimates that by 2026, 40% of new car sales will be BEV.
Bark Industry
Bark Industry 25 giorni fa
Valid comments on many fronts but complaining about the "value" of a car and what it's residual in a few years is absurd in my opinion. ICE vehicles literally drop 30% if not more as soon as you drive it off the lot and then peak it's depreciation a mere 4-5yrs later. So how is that any different than saying "the laptop I bought last year is now not as good as this new one"? Isn't this the business model that all legacy car makers do? They improve and add more features every single year, improve their fuel consumption and horsepower every year no?

@Travel with Tony i heard about it and thought "here we go again" the battery is insulated to slow down the spread of fire, that makes it harder to put out with water, a gas tank has 5x the chemical energy and will produce much more smoke from unburnt fuel so a gas car fire is much more damaging, its 20lbs of lithium metal vs 120lbs of gasoline i can give you several links of gas cars that crashed and cough fire with their passengers dying in the past couple days, you probably didn't hear about them because they weren't Teslas.
